THE GARDEN PROVINCE OF KWAZULU-NATAL

Stretching from the North Coast bordering Mozambique, to the South Coast bordering the Eastern Cape Province, inland to the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park and the famous Battlefields this is the Kingdom of the Zulus. Meet the Zulus, the Indians who arrived on Durban’s shores decades ago, the descendants of the colonial settlers and the Boers. History seeps from the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields where the Zulus, Boers and English clashed. VisitIsandlawana, Rorke’s Drift and Blood River. Toast those who perished. Go white water rafting on the Tugela River.

WILDLIFE AND WETLANDS

Start your safari holiday in the bushveld of Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Experience fantastic wildlife and accommodation. Or drive north to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park,South Africa’s first World Heritage Site, where you can explore the three major lake systems. Find out more about the 700-year-old fishing traditions and walk trails into Africa’s largest estuarine system. Go fishing for shad or diving to see sharks. Wait for the annual winter Sardine Run on the south coast to hook the predators following these small silver fish. Walk the long deserted beaches of the spectacular north coast, lined with coastal forests and impressive dunes. Take photographs of some of the 25 000 year-old coastal dunes, rated among the highest in the world. Then spot some of the 526 bird species and gasp in awe at magical sunsets.

DURBAN AND ENTERTAINMENT

Experience real Indian curry in Durban where hot bunny chows go down well with cold beer. Discover the magical UShaka Marine World, where all kinds or marine animals look back at you. Go on fun water slides and enjoy the picturesque harbour and shops. Surf north and south beaches then pop into a funky pub for lunch.

MOUNTAINS AND ROLLING GRASSLANDS

Stop in Pietermaritzburg when you start exploring the scenic Midlands and uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. Drive through beautiful vistas of thornveld, open grasslands, stark mountain peaks, indigenous forests, waterfalls, rivers and dams. Hike into the Drakensberg mountains to appreciate San Bushmen rock art preserved in caves. The province offers action in the great outdoors – beaches, water sports, mountain climbing and hiking, game viewing and skydiving.
