Amboseli National Park

Visit one of the most popular parks in Kenya. Find Amboseli National Park in the south in Loitoktok District, the Rift Valley Province. Mount Kilimanjaro forms a spectacular backdrop, as this is close to the Tanzanian border.

GETTING THERE

Travel easily to Amboseli by road or by air. Situated just 240km southeast of Nairobi, it spans an area of only 392 square kilometers. This beautiful park lies within the heart of an 8000km2 biome that spreads perfectly across the Kenya-Tanzania border. Explore an unusual terrain of vast open plains, low scrubby vegetation, marshy springs and arid, dusty earth. Revel in the huge blue skies. Aim to get to the dried-up saline lake bed, subject to sporadic floods. Kilimanjaro's melting snows feed the natural springs and swamps, creating perpetual underground water sources.

MAASAI WARRIORS

Meet the colourful Maasai tribes people who have lived in complete harmony with their environment for decades. The park is peppered with inhabited and abandoned Maasai villages, or manyatta, hastily erected out of bent poles and sticks, plastered with cow dung. A nomadic people and subsistence farmers, when the grazing is finished, people and herds simply move on, abandoning these homes. They're well known for their bright red robes, colourful bead necklaces and bracelets and for jumping high in the air during ceremonial dances.
