Likoma Island

Find a quaint Malawian island still unaffected by human development. There are no paved roads and very few cars on this 17 square kilometer isle in Lake Malawi. Meet some of the 6 000 inhabitants, most of whom are traditional fishermen. Stroll into the center of Likoma Island to Mbamba Village. Wander the charming cobbled streets and stop awhile.

Experience the sheer remoteness of Likoma Island. Find it far offshore from Chintheche but only 7km away from Mozambique on the northeastern part of the Lake. ANCIENT CATHEDRALS AND MISSIONS

A must-see is the ancient St Peter's cathedral, the 3rd largest in central Africa. Constructed in 1903 by Scottish missionaries, entirely from local granite, this incredible church is the same size as Winchester Cathedral in the UK! Likoma mission was founded by Bishop Chauncey Maples and Reverend William Johnson in 1886 it was the headquarters of the Anglican Church in Malawi till well after World War II. Revel in its serenity.

ISLAND FUN

Experience Likoma’s laid-back ambiance as you try out some of the activities the island has to offer. How you wish to spend the day is entirely up to you. Immerse yourself in the many land and water sports on offer. Or simply relax and unwind on the beach with a good book and a cocktail at hand.

ACTIVITIES ON OFFER

This is the ideal location for water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, water skiing and sailing. Boat cruises around the island to the nearby Chizumulu Island or to neighboring Mozambique are a great way to explore. Fishing trips can also be organized. O land, enjoy some cultural and physical exploits including guided walks, cycling and quad biking. The island is home to a number of birds as well as small animals.
