Take a trip into Nungwi village, the dhow-making capital of the country, just 2 hours’ drive from Stone Town and Zanzibar International Airport. Get a fascinating insight into the dhow-making industry, a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation for more than a century. Even the tools are still made the same way.
TURTLES AND CAVES
Appreciate a stop at the turtle sanctuary and aquarium or quench your thirst for culture and history with a tour of the Mangapwani Cave. This was a secret hideout from which slaves were illegally led out to the sea through a secret passage after the official closure of the Slave Market in June 1873.
Some holidaymakers prefer the smaller and less developed Kendwa,3 km south of Nungwi. Enjoy great swimming at this beautiful beach, growing more popular over the past five years.
